El bobsleigh es un deporte de invierno, en el que hay un descenso en trineo por una pista helada, en forma de tubo, con equipos de dos o cuatro personas, que alcanzan velocidades extremas. Quizá no sea tan popular como el patinaje o el esquí, ni sea conocido por su nombre, pero en el año 1988 este deporte minoritario alcanzó renombre mundial gracias a la participación en las Olimpíadas de Invierno de Calgary (Canadá) del equipo nacional de Jamaica. Sí, leyeron bien ¡Jamaica! Un país tropical, con temperaturas mínimas anuales de no menos de 25 grados.
Los responsables de esta aventura fueron dos empresarios estadounidenses, quienes estando en la isla presenciaron el Pushcart Derby, un torneo popular que consiste en realizar carreras con carros de mercado a través de calles con pendientes pronunciadas. Estos empresarios se dieron cuenta de lo parecido que era esta competición al bobsleigh y decidieron poner en marcha un equipo.
Antes de iniciar su participación en la competencia ya eran los favoritos del público, atraídos por lo extravagante de ver a un país como Jamaica, que no hay nieve, en un evento tan invernal. Pero en su primera carrera se estrellaron. A pesar de esto, salieron caminando del trineo y cruzaron la línea de meta bajo una lluvia de aplausos.
Desde esa fecha, aún sin conseguir ningún título oficial, este atípico y exótico equipo ha conseguido superarse año tras año, con resultados cada vez más convincentes. Así como ellos han ido mejorando su rendimiento, podemos hacer un paralelismo con las empresas que desean tener mejores procesos, productos o servicios innovadores. La clave de esto será establecer parámetros en donde pese más el talento y la responsabilidad del colectivo que el individuo.
Las organizaciones que encabezan los mercados en la actualidad basan su estrategia en la colaboración como eje del éxito, especialmente en tiempos en los que el entorno siempre está por definirse.
La colaboración es parte indisoluble de la transformación digital en las organizaciones modernas, ya que potencia la creatividad, la velocidad de los cambios, la obtención de resultados y, en definitiva, el ascenso vertiginoso de las organizaciones en un nuevo ambiente donde la resistencia y la lentitud son sinónimos de decadencia empresarial.
Sin un equipo convencido y cohesionado, la transformación digital no es posible.
Factores clave para formar equipos de alto rendimiento
La nueva misión de cualquier compañía y de cualquier líder empresarial es que sus colaboradores funcionen como equipos de alto rendimiento.
En el nuevo enfoque de trabajo, los gélidos puestos ahora son cálidas posiciones de apoyo e integración, con el propósito de cumplir a cabalidad con la visión de la empresa. Se trata de crear equipos sinérgicos, equipos donde la colaboración y la generosidad sean reglas esenciales.
¿Cómo se consigue?
- Conocer y valorar la importancia de los propósitos: El equipo debe compartir objetivos y considerar que estos son relevantes; debe existir un compromiso férreo hacia la conquista de las metas.
- Reconocimiento y estímulo en función de los resultados: Los equipos que funcionan extraordinariamente, aquellos que obtienen resultados, deben ser reconocidos y debidamente recompensados no sólo de forma individual, sino principalmente como colectivo.
- Seleccionar de un grupo heterogéneo a los miembros del equipo: Elegir a los integrantes que conforman el equipo es fundamental para tener éxito. El secreto es que quienes conforman este grupo posean las habilidades y conocimientos necesarios, pero especialmente que sean diversos. La pluralidad es un tremendo capital de un equipo.
- Organización y reglas: Las reglas de funcionamiento deben estar claras y deben ser compartidas por todos; los roles, la distribución de las tareas, los objetivos de cada uno de los integrantes. Así se lograrán consensos rápidamente y se evitarán conflictos innecesarios.
- Empoderamiento: Los equipos de alto rendimiento deben tener la suficiente autonomía para tomar sus propias decisiones y definir su estilo de trabajo. Deben asumir la responsabilidad de los resultados y acciones, con el riesgo que eso conlleva.
- Repartir el liderazgo: Los equipos de alto rendimiento tienen bien distribuido el liderazgo entre sus integrantes. Todas las voces tienen el mismo peso y el rol de coordinador debe estar sujeto a la necesidad del proyecto y no a la inversa.
El futuro es incierto, pero parece que las empresas que quieran estar a la vanguardia, deberán dominar estas herramientas de gestión de equipos.
Cuando el liderazgo le pertenece a un colectivo es más frecuente ver a sus integrantes trabajando con afán, como si fuesen los máximos responsables o incluso como los propietarios de la organización.
Se trata de formar una coalición que sea poderosa, ya que en la era digital el éxito es de todos, así como el fracaso también. El equipo jamaiquino de bobsleigh así lo entendió. Todos suman experiencias, todos son valiosos.
