Skynet ordenó el exterminio de la raza humana; sus sistemas determinaron que el hombre es la mayor amenaza para su propia existencia, una paradoja que desató la más cruenta guerra mundial entre seres humanos y robot-androides asesinos.
Terminator, film de acción estrenado en 1984, dirigido por James Cameron y protagonizado por Arnold Schwarzenegger, es apenas uno de los cientos de argumentos del cine y la literatura de ciencia ficción que ha tratado el tema del enfrentamiento entre el hombre y la máquina creada por él. Una pugna que para algunos científicos se ve cada vez más cercana y más real.
La visión tremendista del científico Stephen Hawking esboza un panorama aterrador, en el que el hombre por su lenta evolución será incapaz de competir con la inteligencia artificial. Sin embargo, la realidad que describen la mayoría de los científicos dedicados al desarrollo de sistemas y robots dibuja un panorama menos extremo pero también complicado: el desplazamiento del hombre de sus cientos de tareas que hoy realiza, que en breve serán asumidas por robots.
La automatización es una realidad que irá en aumento
Se estima que cerca del 50% de las tareas que realiza el hombre en la actualidad serán asumidas por robots o sistemas. Tal como en los últimos años sucedió con los cajeros de estacionamientos, en los próximos 30 años desaparecerán. Algunos oficios mecanizados como operadores de telemarketing, cajeros de banco, ejecutivos de créditos y cobranzas en instituciones financieras e incluso las secretarias legales y los operadores de radio, entre muchos otros, podrán fácilmente ser asumidos por sistemas de inteligencia artificial capaces de predecir actitudes y necesidades para gestionar respuestas satisfactorias.
La pérdida de estos empleos será gradual y silenciosa y, en principio, no afectará a aquellos en los que interviene la creatividad humana.
Pero el panorama no es tan aterrador, porque si bien es cierto que la inteligencia artificial irá desplazando al hombre de algunas tareas y oficios, no es menos cierto que generará nuevas necesidades y otros roles que respondan a la automatización de los procesos productivos.
El mundo ha cambiado, la demanda de especialistas en las diversas ramas de la ciencia y la tecnología ha crecido vertiginosamente en los últimos años, pero las exigencias del momento van un poco más allá: hablamos de un nuevo perfil, de profesionales “mixtos”, es decir, que tienen conocimientos en distintas áreas (diseño, comunicaciones, negocio, ingeniería, arquitectura, medicina, mecánica, etc.), pero también en el uso y manejo de nuevas tecnologías.

La transformación digital está demandando nuevas habilidades y la necesidad de desarrollar profesiones, oficios y roles asociados al progreso tecnológico y a la automatización.
En este contexto, las universidades han respondido a esta realidad abriendo materias y carreras como: arquitectura de software, ingeniería en tecnologías de la información, nanotecno logía y robótica, entre otros estudios orientados a robustecer el perfil profesional de los nuevos tiempos.
Un ejemplo de ello es el data scientist, científicos de datos capaces de interpretar datos, identificar patrones, crear modelos predictivos y generar respuestas.
Hablamos también de otras disciplinas informáticas dedicadas al desarrollo de la tan temida ‘inteligencia artificial’ y al ‘aprendizaje de las máquinas’ (machine learning), que son parte del llamado ‘conocimiento profundo’ (deep learning) a través del cual el hombre ha sido capaz de replicar los algoritmos de las redes neuronales humanas, emulándolas matemáticamente.
La escena hollywoodense en la que robots y hombres conviven en un mismo entorno de trabajo está cada vez más próxima a convertirse en realidad. Incluso la Federación Internacional de Robótica (IFR por sus siglas en inglés), proyecta que para el 2019 habrá 2,6 millones de robots industriales instalados, lo que implicará la modificación del esquema laboral.
El reemplazo de muchos trabajadores por la integración de los robots seguirá generando grandes debates en los próximos años. Sin embargo, las visiones más optimistas aseguran que la tecnología no acabará con más empleos de los que pueda generar.
Lo que sí queda claro es que la transformación digital es imparable y que sólo las empresas capaces de adaptarse a estos cambios sobrevivirán en un mundo cada vez más competitivo.
